Our almost-3-year-old Chaos System Change
We have 5 kids, and our almost-3-year-old was creating chaos every night for everyone.
Not because he was “bad.”
Because the system had no boundaries.
For nearly 1,000 nights, bedtime meant laying with mom until fully asleep — sometimes for hours, most times all night.
Comfort became the expectation.
The expectation became the structure.
So we changed the system.
The new rule:
15 minutes with mom, then bedtime independently.
My expectation:
- resistance
- pushback
- emotional testing
- several difficult nights before adjustment
The goal wasn’t removing comfort.
The goal was creating structure.
Nights 1–3 were brutal.
By night 4 we had measurable progress.
By the end of the week, the system was already stabilizing.
What I keep seeing over and over is this:
People often abandon a good structural change because they mistake early resistance for system failure.
Sometimes the system is working.
You’re just in the resistance phase of change.
